Online TEFL certification: what it is and why accreditation matters
TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. A TEFL certificate is the qualification that schools, language academies and online platforms ask for before they hire English teachers, whether you want to teach abroad or teach English online from home.
Not all TEFL certificates are equal. Our Level 5 TEFL is regulated by Ofqual and awarded through TQUK, and our other online TEFL courses are CPD-accredited. TEFL UK certificates are accepted by employers in 60+ countries and can be legalised by the FCDO where official document verification is needed.

Which TEFL course should I do?
It depends on your goals. To start teaching quickly, the 120-hour Professional TEFL is our quickest accredited route at £99. If you're aiming for competitive jobs in Asia or Europe, the 140-hour Combined TEFL adds a Teaching Practicum with real classroom hours. For a regulated qualification, choose the 168-hour Ofqual Level 5 TEFL.
Is TEFL UK accredited?
Yes. TEFL UK is an approved centre of TQUK, an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation. Our Level 5 TEFL is regulated by Ofqual, the body that regulates GCSEs and A levels in England, and our other courses are CPD-accredited. TEFL UK certificates can be legalised by the FCDO for countries that require official document verification.
How long does a TEFL course take?
The 120-hour Professional TEFL can be completed in as little as three weeks. The 168-hour Level 5 typically takes 6 to 8 weeks. All our online TEFL courses are self-paced, so you can study around work and other commitments.
Can I teach English online with a TEFL qualification?
Yes. Many online teaching platforms and companies ask for a recognised TEFL certificate, and our 120-hour course meets the requirement for most of them. Add the 20-hour Teaching English Online course if you want to specialise in teaching online from day one.
Do I need a degree to do a TEFL course?
No, you don't need a degree to take a TEFL course. However, some countries, including China, South Korea and the UAE, require a bachelor's degree for a work visa. Our placement team can advise on the requirements for your chosen destination.
What's the difference between TEFL, TESOL and CELTA?
TEFL and TESOL are different names for the same type of qualification, used in different parts of the world, and employers treat them the same way. CELTA is a Cambridge qualification with in-person assessed teaching that typically costs £1,000 to £1,500. Our Ofqual-regulated Level 5 TEFL sits at the same level (RQF Level 5) as CELTA and can be studied online for a fraction of the cost.
